From the field: Turning awareness into action

At Buckskin Mine in Gillette, Wyoming, Safety Manager Justin Walker has made mental health and recovery support a regular part of safety conversations. In addition to using the Under the Hat toolbox talks, he ensures posters, wallet cards and QR codes are posted across the mine so it’s simple to reach resources anytime — whether someone needs to talk, find a counselor or support a loved one.

It’s the support he wishes he had while battling substance use disorder decades ago. Watch the video to see how Justin and his team are creating space for open, judgment-free conversations around mental health and recovery.

Substance use disorder isn’t a choice

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a health condition that affects how the brain and body work. Within the construction industry, roughly one in seven employees live with a substance use disorder, often tied to alcohol, tobacco or pain medication.

No matter where you are in that journey — quitting, cutting back or simply taking stock — recovery is possible with the right support. This month, explore resources that help you or someone you care about take that first step toward healing.

Know the signs

  • More absences or showing up tired
  • Trouble staying focused or alert
  • Mood swings or pulling away from others
  • Relying more often on alcohol, pain meds or other substances to cope
You don’t have to fix it or call anyone out — just notice and care. A simple “How’s it going?” can make a real difference.
